We, may of the city of Briel, testify that Mr. Jacob Frautschi, citizen of the commune since the month of May, aged 44 years, who is a native of Gesseney, Canton of Berne, in Switzerland, who wants to return to France in 18??, who married the 23rd of March 1843 Elise Perrin, aged 34 years, living in our commune and from which marriage is born Elisa Frautschi, aged 4 years who has declared to want to return, he and his family in his native land, and (?) thru. We invite the civil and military authorities to let pass and (help?) facilitate the journey (circulation) of the citizen Frautschi and his family and (assist in the?) return to his native country, and to give him help and protection in case of danger.

Done in the mayor’s office of the town of Briel the twenty third of October 1843 on presentation of --? Papers.

Question-marked portions of the text indicate that either the document was worn and the actual lettering was missing or that the text was unreadable to Ms. Kesselring.
